VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA

Monday August 15

2:30 a.m.

A loud ring ripped Sydney Foster from a dream so intense she could actually feel the faceless man’s warm lips on her skin. Startled and severely disappointed she opened her eyes, but the darkness of the room blinded her. She quickly closed her eyes then snuggled deeper into the warm blankets hoping to resume her erotic dream. It had been so vivid that she would have sworn it was real. She wished it was real.

Ring!

Sydney groaned as the ringing mercilessly penetrated the silent night. Angered at being awoken from her dream, she silently cursed the phone. Her anger quickly dissolved when the ringing jogged her memory of a night long ago which had changed her world. Agonizing dread clutched her chest making her anxious to discover who was calling. Moaning, she diverted tired eyes to the clock on her nightstand only to be greeted by its glowing digits alerting her it was well after two in the morning.

Sydney snapped her eyes shut. There was no way in hell she was getting up this early if she didn’t need too. If she ignored the phone maybe whoever was calling would get the message she was trying to sleep and hang up. Little did she know the call would change her life.

Ring!

“Who the hell is calling at this hour?”

Sydney moaned, despite the nervous energy which filled her.

She hated receiving calls in the middle of the night for fear of hearing news that someone she cared about was dead or injured. One night she had endured such a nightmare and she prayed she never would again.

Ring!

“I’m coming,” Sydney snapped. Groggy from deep sleep she blindly searched her nightstand for the phone. Her hand brushed the top of it and she snatched it off its base.

“Sydney?” Dr. Osiris’s British voice was panicked. He was always calm and the tone in his voice alarmed her.

“Doc?” Sydney breathed, “What’s wrong?”

Sydney shot upright. If Doc was calling in the middle of the night something was going on. She didn’t have to close her eyes to read the nervous and fearful vibrations he was sending off. She gulped hard. Yep. Something was terribly wrong she could feel it deep within her. Being an empath, she could sense others emotions which wasn’t always a pleasant thing. It was sometimes helpful but not pleasant.

“I need you to come to my office immediately.” Doc commanded. He rarely issued orders, especially in the middle of the night.

Sydney blinked and glanced at her clock again. She couldn’t believe she was being summoned to the university at two thirty in the damn morning.

“Professor-”

“Sydney, I can’t protect you unless you’re here, in my office.”

Doc had her attention now. Sydney plastered the phone against her ear.

“Protect me from what?” she demanded.

She rarely questioned the professor, but she had to know what would be so dangerous that he would demand she come to his office in the middle of night.

“You’re running out of time. I’ll explain when you’re safe. You’re in grave danger, Syd.”

Sydney rolled her eyes. She was more than capable of protecting herself. She didn’t need a man protecting her, she had her magick after all.

“In danger from what? I can protect myself, Doc. I have my wand and-”

“You need more magickal protection than your wand can provide and you need it now.” Doc hesitated. “Syd, there have been attacks tonight…”
