PROLOGUE

 

 

 

VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA

Monday August 15

2:30 a.m.

 

A loud ring ripped Sydney Foster from a dream so intense she could actually feel the faceless man’s warm lips on her skin. Startled and severely disappointed she opened her eyes, but the darkness of the room blinded her. She quickly closed her eyes then snuggled deeper into the warm blankets hoping to resume her erotic dream. It had been so vivid that she would have sworn it was real. She wished it was real.

Ring!

Sydney groaned as the ringing mercilessly penetrated the silent night. Angered at being awoken from her dream, she silently cursed the phone. Her anger quickly dissolved when the ringing jogged her memory of a night long ago which had changed her world. Agonizing dread clutched her chest making her anxious to discover who was calling. Moaning, she diverted tired eyes to the clock on her nightstand only to be greeted by its glowing digits alerting her it was well after two in the morning.

Sydney snapped her eyes shut. There was no way in hell she was getting up this early if she didn’t need too. If she ignored the phone maybe whoever was calling would get the message she was trying to sleep and hang up. Little did she know the call would change her life.

Ring!

“Who the hell is calling at this hour?”

Sydney moaned, despite the nervous energy which filled her.

She hated receiving calls in the middle of the night for fear of hearing news that someone she cared about was dead or injured. One night she had endured such a nightmare and she prayed she never would again.

Ring!

“I’m coming,” Sydney snapped. Groggy from deep sleep she blindly searched her nightstand for the phone. Her hand brushed the top of it and she snatched it off its base.

 “Sydney?” Dr. Osiris’s British voice was panicked. He was always calm and the tone in his voice alarmed her.

“Doc?” Sydney breathed, “What’s wrong?”

Sydney shot upright. If Doc was calling in the middle of the night something was going on. She didn’t have to close her eyes to read the nervous and fearful vibrations he was sending off. She gulped hard. Yep. Something was terribly wrong she could feel it deep within her. Being an empath, she could sense others emotions which wasn’t always a pleasant thing. It was sometimes helpful but not pleasant.

“I need you to come to my office immediately.” Doc commanded. He rarely issued orders, especially in the middle of the night.

Sydney blinked and glanced at her clock again. She couldn’t believe she was being summoned to the university at two thirty in the damn morning.

“Professor-”

“Sydney, I can’t protect you unless you’re here, in my office.”

Doc had her attention now. Sydney plastered the phone against her ear.

“Protect me from what?” she demanded.

She rarely questioned the professor, but she had to know what would be so dangerous that he would demand she come to his office in the middle of night.

“You’re running out of time. I’ll explain when you’re safe. You’re in grave danger, Syd.”

Sydney rolled her eyes. She was more than capable of protecting herself. She didn’t need a man protecting her, she had her magick after all.

“In danger from what? I can protect myself, Doc. I have my wand and-”

“You need more magickal protection than your wand can provide and you need it now.” Doc hesitated. “Syd, there have been attacks tonight…”

Happy Independence Day!

Let Freedom Ring!

Today is a day which all Americans should celebrate and be proud of. It is also a day we should honor our military and thank them for the sacrifices they have made so that we may live in freedom. So as you celebrate today with family and friends in your cookouts and fire works displays remmeber those who fought and are fighting so that we, the citizens of the greatest country on the planet, can enjoy such displays with repression and with freedom!

What is Independence Day?

It is the day when the continential congress adopted and signed the declaration of independence. This was the offical document which stated the states independence from Britain and King George. For anyone who has never read it, it is worh reading. Every American should read it, especially those who had ancestors fight in the American Revolution, such as myself. I had eight ancestors from PA and SC fight in the war.

July 4th was not the day the declaration actually was signed. It was completed on July 2, 1776 when the Second Contintential Congress voted to accept and approve the resolution of independence (most congress memeber ssigned the declaration on this day). Two days later, on July 4th, the declaration which was composed by a comittee and Thomas Jefferson, was finished with it’s revision and was signed by the remaining congressman. The back of the declaration states, “Original Declaration of Independence / dated 4th July 1776.”

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

Guilty From Beyond The Grave……St. Phillip’s Graveyard Ghost Encounter

Standing on a street corner near the graveyard, Sydney absorbed the energy of her surroundings in an effort to gain her sense of direction. The sun had now been down for at least two hours and the moon was high in the sky. Its brightness illuminated the perimeter making it easier for her to assess her surroundings.

Sydney listened closely in the silent night, her hearing tuning into the footsteps hurrying down the street toward her. Her hair stood on end when she peered down the street, but still couldn’t spot anyone. She glanced in the opposite direction and cautiously stepped into the street. Strange. No one was around, but she knew beyond a doubt she had heard someone. Her eyes widened when she recognized what she was hearing, it was the sound of boots and heading rapidly toward her. 

Sydney pushed the sound of the footsteps from her mind. She was only a block from the graveyard, and the streets were free of pedestrians. She knew the area would be clear of vacationers since most people didn’t hang around graveyards after dark, especially ones reported to be haunted. But she was a lone female on a dark street. What if the owner of the footsteps meant her harm? If he intended to harm her and was bigger than she was there would be little she could do, except use her wand.

Sydney pulled it from her back pocket and gripped it tightly in front of her. She knew she could magickally protect herself, and the law would legally enforce her decision to defend herself because she held a federal Magick and Envisionment license.

     

Sydney opened her mind and used her power to assess the situation. She sighed in frustration. She wasn’t happy with what she sensed. Whoever was generating the footsteps wasn’t human, but was someone who was both magickal and immortal. She wasn’t prepared to deal with an immortal when all of her energy was focused on Aiden.Without seeing the owner of the footsteps, Sydney decided she would make a run for the graveyard. Aiden would be able to help if Leonard or a demon had found her. As

Sydney hurried down State Street and rounded the corner to St. Phillip’s, she gasped. The footsteps were following her. What type of immortal was following her in the Charleston night? 
    

Sydney’s heart raced and her pulse quickened in her throat.

She glanced over her shoulder and caught a glimpse of a dark figure darting behind an old oak. A cold sweat formed on her brow. Instinct overruled her and she broke into a run. She sprinted through the graveyard’s ancient iron gate into the passage on the north side of the graveyard. Sydney wasn’t sure this was the section of the graveyard Aiden was in, but it was the only gate which was open. As she entered the graveyard, she couldn’t see Aiden. 

Panicked, she spun around and spotted Aiden kneeling next to an old headstone sobbing with his head in his hands. She sprinted to him and jolted to a stop beside him. Gasping for breath, she reached across a weathered headstone to Aiden. Sydney paused as she glanced down and realized it held the name Arlen Middleton. Aiden’s pain reflected in his light eyes as

Sydney divereted her gaze back to him, watching him intently. 

Thinking back to when they had first met, she now understood why she had felt drawn to Aiden. They were attracted to each other because they each held deep sadness and pain, but the difference between them was Aiden hadn’t learned to handle his raw emotions, and Sydney had learned to control hers. Aiden’s Master Envisioner status had magnified his emotions sending up a signal through the different dimensions like a honing beacon which said, “I am power, come use me.”

It had to stop.

Aiden’s pain had to cease or it would tear up him. The pain would destroy him and then possibly the team. It was a risk she was not willing to take.

As Sydney struggled to search Aiden’s mind, she knew he was more than half way headed toward destruction. Crap. She could barely use her telepathy on him, because he was in so much agony. She was able to catch a glimpse of all the medication, antidepressants and anti anxiety medications utilized in times of severe depression. He was ashamed he had taken these medications.     

Sydney probed Aiden’s mind and discovered how alone he felt. He felt as if he didn’t have a soul in the world to help him, guide him, and provide the light and hope he needed. She now knew that his sadness is what had been the final element convert him into Master Envisioner status. The raw power of Aiden’s soul had turned him into a Master.

Watching Aiden kneel in the humid damp grass at the foot of his brother Arlen’s headstone was making Sydney depressed. There was no doubt in her mind she had to help him. Sydney had to bring Aiden back to the human side of life. He needed to survive for his family, himself, and for their Envisioner team. The team needed him, after all he was an irreplaceable part of the team. Tears streamed down Aiden’s face as he leaned on his brother’s headstone. The headstone appeared to shift as Aiden’s weight touched it, but it was just an illusion. The headstone remained firm and unchanged as it had throughout the years. The graveyard was old, dating back to Old Charles Towne. Dates from the 1700’s emerged throughout the graveyard proving its place in history prior to the American Revolution.     

The scent of saltwater penetrated the air, reminding Sydney how close she was to the Atlantic Ocean and Charleston Bay. Sydney surveyed the graveyard as a thick fog began to roll in. The approaching fog held an eerie glow within its quickly changing density.

Sydney’s senses urged her to evacuate to a safer place, but she ignored them. She had no reason to fear the dead or the graveyard since she had spent many nights in them for investigations, but something wasn’t right.

She turned to check on Aiden, and watched as a young male spirit about thirteen appeared in front of his brother.
 Sadness hung heavy in the air like a smoke consuming everything in its path. Aiden reached out to his brother, extending a shaky arm.

Aiden called upon his Envisioner magick and began summoning the dead.

What the hell is he doing?  This wasn’t good, Aiden shouldn’t be using his power to summon a loved one who had passed over. Such actions were illegal and held extreme punishments. The vibrations Arlen was bestowing upon Sydney and Aiden clearly stated he had been at rest and resented being summoned back from death. Glancing at Aiden’s forearm, Sydney noticed a recent few inch long incision on his left forearm.

Sydney gasped. Damn it.

Aiden had allowed his blood to consummate the calling of his brother in a summoning ritual. The strong scent of herbs he had used for the ritual jarred Sydney’s senses, her eyes widened as she saw the salt and blood circle he had poured around his brother’s headstone. She shook her head in denial as she leaned down and touched the still tacky blood with her fingertips. The moment she touched the circle, a tingle spiraled up her arm, jolting her heart.

Sydney sucked in a deep breath of stifling air when she touched the remains of a necromancer ritual.

“Oh, Aiden. What have you done?” Sydney whispered as she squatted down next to the circle. 

Aiden had broken the cardinal rule of Envisionment. He would have hell to pay…literally.

The Envisioner Series…Guilty From Beyond The Grave & Incubus Illusions Update

Guilty From Beyond The Grave is complete.  Woo Hoo!!

The rewrite from first POV to third POV was a challenge to complete while I have been in nursing school full time. I did meet my goals and also cut 10k words, finishing the final manuscript at 98k. I also managed to finish the final edit of the book. What am I doing now? We’ll, I’m polishing my synopsis and have been sending out query letters. I’ve also been in what I call and “create and search mode” which I use to help me polish my outline and synopsis for book two, Incubus Illusions. I changed the ending of Guilty and I have to change how I will start Incubus Illusions. I have approx 150 pages complete of Incubus Illusions, so it will be interesting to see how I redevelop the beginning. I also have a new plot line to the series. I start my summer break from nursing school July 4. During the six weeks I have off this summer, I am planning on finishing Incubus.

New Projects

I’m in the process of finishing the last of the final edit for the rewrite of book one of The Envisioner Series, Guilty From Beyond The Grave. Progress has been slow because I have been in nursing school full-time. Summer vacation is coming soon and so is graduation so my writing will increase shortly.

I have some new projects to announce. Many of you know I have started book two of The Envisioner Series, Incubus Illusions, and I will continue to work on it. My goal is to finish it on my summer break by mid august.

 My new project is a second series. This series is still in the planning stages and within the next few weeks I will start writing it. This second series idea is dark urban fantasy and will be titled, The Punisher Series. It does have connections with The Envisioner Series but will be a completely stand alone series. I have plans for the main characters in both series to have a few books where they work together.

The Punisher Series is about the life of Rhian “Mercy” O’Connor. She is not completely human and but a half breed (Half demon from her father and her mother was half fey and half witch). Rhian despises her father who is none other than the Underworld’s most powerful Incubus King ever in existence and is demanding she help him rule the Underworld now that she has come of magickal age.

Rhian has other ideas and she hates evil, especially after her father had her mother killed to try to take her into the Underworld and groom her to be his successor. She will not allow the evil inside her to ever snuff out light and in return she goes on a quest. She champions all innocents. Demons and evil look out, you have the Underworld King’s renegade daughter after you. Shes killing her own kind and banishing them back to the Underworld sending a clear message to her father who’s in charge on Earth and in the Feary Realm.

 She Punishes all who snuff out light, love, and innocence. Rhian “Mercy” O’Connor has no mercy.

Happy New Year

Happy 2008! The past year flew by and it’s hard to believe we are entering a new year already. I always enjoy the first of the year becasue it brings me hope. Its a time of change and new beginnings. We can do anything we desire, all it requires is determination. My goal for this year is to finish the next two books. I want them to be written in the best possible way I can, and I want to sell them.

Remember, if you can dream it, you can do it.

Progress and work on Incubus Illusions (Book Two)

Finally, I’m feeling better, after a week on being so terribly sick, I have bronchitis and a sinus infection. I have not been this sick in years, but woo hoo, I’m feeling better today. I popped in a few soundtracks ….Underworld, Queen of the Damned, and yes….The Wedding Singer and it spikedmy urge to write…. yeah! Now I’m watching Evanescene’s DVD….they are my inspirtation for “Guilty”.

I have completed some pages today on the edit of the rewrite for Guilty From Beyond The Grave, and am now I’m working on book two, Incubus Illusions. I have been chomping at the bit, excited as heck to work on Incubus Illusions….book two. I most certainly love the creation stage of writing better than editing!!!!

 I have come to the conclusion that to keep myself from becomming bored with the edit of Guilty,  that I’d work on Incubus Illusions for a bit every day. Forward progress…..woo hoo!!!

Radio Show Invite

Very cool news. I have been invited by a local paranormal investigative team to talk on their radio show! I have a lot of experiences to share and some of these experiences are the basis for the hauntings in my books! I’ll let everyone know when it happens. As for the progress of the book…well, the revisions/edit are in works. Its difficult to finish it earlier with me being in nursing school full time, but I have a month off at Christmas and next week off….so I’ll be deep in revision/edits. I am soooooo excited to start working on Book Two….Incubus Illusions….sex demons will be sure to cause some interesting senarios for the characters….especially Sydney. Stay tuned! I hope everyone has a great weekend!

 TOP NEWS: DEMONIC ATTACK ON CAMPUS & PARAPSYCHOLOGY STUDENT FOUND DEAD

     The Federal Parapsychology Department (FPD) and The Parapsychology Department are sad to announce the death of Parapsychology student, Candi Miller, on August 15, 2007. Ms. Miller was found dead near the Parapsychology Department’s faculty parking lot. Details of her death have been sealed by the FPD. No statements are being made at this time. Although, Parapsychology students were placed on lockdown for a week after the attack and not allowed outdoors after dark. They are now required to carry their wands until the end of the university year!

     Master Dr. Sydney Foster, Assistant Parapsychology Chair, made this statement in mid August, ” I am distressed to announce the death of Ms. Candi Miller, a Parapsychology senior, talented psychic, and Envisioner Team Beta Candidate. She will be greatly missed and our thoughts are with her family and friends.”

    Professor Foster and the FPD had no comment in reference to a claim that the Professor Foster was attacked by a demon master in the Parapsychology faculty parking the same night Ms. Miller was murdered. A witness who has requested to remain unidentified, states he saw Professor Foster attacked and dragged across the parking lot by a demon master toward a Underworld dimensional portal. Professor Foster missed a week of her post and her students claim she returned with severe bruises and cuts to her neck, face, head, and arms. Is this claim fact or fiction? You be the judge!

NEWLY FORMING ENVISIONER TEAM BETA IS SEEKING APPLICANTS

     Due to worldwide commitments and the popularity of Envisioner Team Alpha, the Parapsychology Department is going to establish a second Envsioner Team, Envisioner Team Beta. Applications for candidates will be accepted through January 15, 2008.

     Please remember that each Envsioner Team is composed of three Envsioners and three support personnel (Technology Specialist, Magickal Protection Specialist, and Information Specialist). The new Envsioner’s will be trained by Envsioner Team Alpha Capatin, Ashton O’ Brien, Master Aiden Middleton, and Master Dr. Sydney Foster. The support personnel will be trained by current Envisioner Team Alpha Tech Specialist, Evan Powers, and world famous Magickal Protection Specialist and Paranormal Lawyer, Slate MacDonald. In order to be accepted as a candidate for an Envisioner post, a candidate must either have a degree in Parapsychology or be a Parapsychology major, be telepathic, and psychic. Each candidate will be required to prove their abilities before the FPD’s federal licensing board to earn a federal Envsioner license.

     Parapsychology Department chair and Envsionment Founder, Dr. Osiris, has taken a leave of absence to conduct imperative research on Envsionment and the Underworld. Acting Department Chair, Master Dr. Foster is in charge of the Parapsychology Department until Professor Osiris’s return, which is projected to be around Yule.

SAMHAIN CELEBRATION AND BONFIRE

     All university students are invited to the Parapsychology Department’s Samhain celebration and annual bonfire located in front of the Parapsychology Building at the department’s magickal ritual center,  which is within the actual sized Stonehenge monolith stone circle. Please enter the circle and join the bonfire and celebration. ID is required for those student’s over twentyone who wish to drink. Remember, we will know if you’re using a fake ID, we use magick after all! Parapsychology student’s are expected to bring their wands! Come join the celebration!!

Happy Belated Halloween/Samhain

Happy Halloween/Samhain!

I hope everyone has a safe and fun holiday. As for me, I spent the night editing. Although, as I peaked out my window, children swarmed the neighborhood. It was actually the first year I did not dress up or give candy. I simply had other things on my mind. Children can trick or treat until they are twelve, then its illegal, as is trick or treating until after 8pm. I saw so many kids who looked older than twelve. I think twelve was when I stopped going, but times were different then and we stayed out till 9 or 10 pm and did not have to worry about being mugged or chased. I do however remember the night before Halloween, called Hell Night, when kids pulled nasty jokes. I can’t even remember how many times the huge maple tree in front of our house was TP’d (toilet papered)..and I had to clean it out. Its not fun when it rains to get that out of the leaves!!! I left them nice presents in return. <grin>

Techinically, Samhain (the Celtic holiday) starts at sunset on Oct 31 and goes until the next day. It’s the day when the veil between the living and dead is the weakest and ancestors roam among us….a day to remember them.

New Ideas

I have been finishing up the edits from Guilty From Beyond The Grave and am extremely ready to begin working on book two, Incubus Illusions. I have notes ready, the first 100 pages done and am ready to begin the creative stage again. I always find creation better than editing. I know many writers who would agree with me.

For book four, I have found a theme song….Kamelot’s March of Mephisto. This really fits the book. I think the theme song for Guilty From Beyond the Grave would be Evanescene’s Haunted, but there are a few songs by them which could also work. I wrote the book to Evanescence. What does that mean? We’ll for me, when I write I am inspired by music, and Evanescence is the band who fits Sydney. I’m going to place Kamelot’s music with Slate, and perhaps Godsmack with Ashton. Aiden? We’ll I havent really placed him yet but we will see a book about Aiden.

When I write or edit, I listen to music. I HAVE to have music, it sets my mood, set’s the fantasy worlds in which I write. What am I listening to now??? Kamelot. I really like Kamelot and their music fits Ashton, Slate, Cian, and Ailill in my books. It has also led to a new story line. I can not divert my muse and she likes to reveal new ideas to me in the oddest places. Sometimes I wish I could keep some type of water proof paper and pen in the shower!!! Argh…

All I will say is the plot lines twist between the books and although you will be able to read each book individually, you will need to read all of them to see the entire story….it’s almost like Harry Potter in the story line…meaning multiple books tell the entire story.

 It’s one long long story with revenge, murder, ghosts, castles, magick, and dangerous dealings with the fey, the Underworld, demons, and entities…finally the hidden secret will be revealed and shock Sydney. She won’t know who to trust as she travels time through the spirit gateways to the faery world, Ireland, and the British Isles. Deception is something she has learned quickly, becasue it’s difficult to love when you’re decieved by those you trusted with your life. And sometimes the enemy is not so bad after all….sometimes the enemy is the trusted. Thankfully Sydney has the sword of truth, honor, and magick wielded by the fey and held by Arthur…once upon a time. Can she stop an otherworldly battle?

Williamsburg Book Signing

Barnes and Noble at The College of William and Mary was holding a book signing for Michelle Willingham, Diane Gaston, Sydney Croft, and Marliss Melton. Michelle is a member of CRW with me and the others authors I had heard of but had never met.

I had a wonderful time and the ladies were wonderful. If you ladies read this….It was great to meet you and I can’t wait to read your books!

Favorite Time of Year

I have always loved fall, and October is my favorite month. Memories of apple orchards, apple cider, colorful tress, fallen leaves, Halloween, Thanksgiving, cooler evenings and days fill my mind. Here in coastal Virginia, the leaves generally don’t fall until Novemeber, but I love to drive to Williamsburg and northern Virginia and absorb the scenery of the changing colors.

Generally I try to put up my Halloween decorations around September 15. I like to have at least a full month to enjoy my lawn decorations. I think my neighbors have come to the conclusion my house is Halloween central. Some of them will decorate and some try to “out do” each other. Dont you just love that? NOT!!!

 I just enjoy having fun and turning my simple ranch into a “Haunted House”. To add to the fun, on Halloween night I dress in my long black gown and long black velvet cape (I custom ordered it from England about 5 years ago), witches hat, and hand out goodies to the children. Of course, the candy is in my cauldron! Its SPELLtacular!! Haha….

Do you decorate for fall or Halloween/Samhain? If so what do you do for decorations and do you have a problem with your neighbors trying to put up bigger and better decorations? (This really happens at Christmas time with the lights, etc) What is your favorite season?
